Bhutan’s arts and crafts comprise thirteen categories known as Zo Rig Chusum (Zo = the ability to make; Rig = science or craft; Chusum = thirteen). They exemplify the “spirit and identity” of the kingdom as they evolved over the centuries, often preserved and passed down through generations of families which practised a particular craft. The thirteen crafts are carpentry, painting, paper making, blacksmithery, silver- and gold-smithing, weaving, clay arts, stonework, bronze casting, wood turning, cane and bamboo work, needlework, and carving.
